Azhwan Shaswar

I turn unruly data into clear, defensible decisions for telecom networks, humanitarian organisations, and anyone drowning in spreadsheets.

Principles

Six convictions I won’t compromise on.

Every report must earn its audience.

A dashboard no one opens is a monument, not a tool. I begin with the decision someone must make on Monday morning and work backwards to the data.

An alarm should explain itself.

A red light without a cause, a location, or a consequence is merely noise with a colour scheme.

Governance precedes glamour.

One definition per metric, one owner per dataset, and a documented lineage; only then do the charts arrive.

Technology should speak the user’s language.

Where English, Arabic, and Kurdish share every conversation, multilingual AI is not a feature; it is the baseline.

Knowledge must outlive its author.

A system only one person understands is a liability with a login screen. I document what I build, and I teach it.

Signal over noise.

Most data is static. The craft lies in isolating what matters, and in proving that it is real.

Selected work

Where I’ve made a difference.

Organisations are left unnamed by design; the substance remains.

2022 – presentTelecommunications

Leading data intelligence for a mobile network operator

  • Rose from analyst to manager; I now lead analysts, analytics engineers, and information-systems specialists under a single governance framework.
  • Co-created an in-house operations platform that monitors the network in real time, tracks alarms and performance indicators, and alerts engineers the moment service degrades.
  • Moved heavyweight reporting onto self-hosted, open-source monitoring, giving engineers live views in place of yesterday’s exports.
  • Architected a customer-support assistant that understands English, Arabic, and Kurdish, built on a bespoke intent-recognition model and extended with retrieval-augmented, agentic AI.
  • Delivered predictive models for forecasting, anomaly detection, and automated master-data management.

2025Academic research

An analytics engine for scholarly publishing

  • Engineered a pipeline that gathers open academic records at scale and organises more than 20,000 publications by author, institution, country, and citation.
  • Applied machine learning to classify papers and journals, and co-authored the academic manifesto that emerged from the work.

Information management where every row is a person

  • Built information-management and visualisation systems for refugee and displaced-community needs assessments.
  • Designed offline-capable mobile surveys and case-tracking workflows for field teams.
  • Developed databases and donor-ready reporting for smaller organisations.

2016 – 2022Finance & systems

Databases that move real money

  • Built financial and inventory applications that processed more than $50 million in transactions.
  • Designed schemas, tuned performance, and transformed manual accounting workflows into automated, web-based reporting.

Portfolio

Six public dashboards, three datasets.

Each one is live and fully interactive. I built the developer survey twice, once in Power BI and once in Tableau, so you can compare how each tool tells the same story.

Toolkit

The instruments I work with.

Platforms, languages, and engines I have built with in production, grouped by what they do.

Skills

How brightly each skill shines.

Measured the way astronomers measure stars: the more light, the greater the mastery.

Brightest: advanced Bright: intermediate Faint: still learning

2016

The year I first stood at the front of a classroom.

Teaching

The other half of the work.

Long before network operations centres, there were classrooms: computer labs in displacement camps, curricula written from scratch, nine-month courses for young people rebuilding their futures, and data-science tutoring for undergraduates. I still train teams today, because the most durable system I can leave behind is a group of people who no longer need me.

About

The person behind the dashboards.

I’m Azhwan Shaswar, a data architect, consultant, and trainer from Sulaimani. For more than a decade I have built systems that help organisations see clearly: first in classrooms and humanitarian field offices, then in finance, academic research, and telecommunications.

I hold a B.Sc. in Information Technology with a minor in Business Management, I work fluently across English, Arabic, and Kurdish, and I believe good data work should be as understandable as it is rigorous. The beret is optional; the conviction is not.
